Its location makes it a good base to head into the surrounding mountains, where you can find the famous Takashima and Hira trails, and also the Mt. Hakodate ski resort. If you are planning to cycle around lake Biwa (220km) it is ideal for ideal spot for an overnight stay. In addition to the outdoor activities, there are onsen nearby, which make for a great respite after a long day outside.
